What expertise will you bring to AI?

I completed my BSc in Computer Science at Northumbria University, where I focused on the use of low-cost IoT devices to monitor water quality in real-time. This project showcased the potential of IoT technologies for expanding environmental monitoring beyond experts to engage citizens directly. My previous experience in the financial services sector further deepened my understanding of how advancing technologies drive workplace efficiency. I am excited to continue exploring the intersection of technology, environmental sustainability, and community involvement in my current research.

Research Interests

My research passion focuses on integrating off-the-shelf IoT technology into environmental monitoring to enhance our understanding of the environment around us. I am particularly interested in how AI technology can be applied alongside these IoT sensor devices to optimise the data accuracy and improve sensor placement. Since many parameters that determine water quality are not measurable by physical sensors, I aim to explore how utilising AI technologies, such as visual data analysis, combined with citizen feedback, can help improve water quality evaluation.

What made you want to apply for CCAI?

I applied to the CCAI because of the interdisciplinary opportunities to combine my passion for addressing climate-related issues with my background in Computer Science. I am excited to work on a research project that I hope will make a positive impact on citizens and contribute to real-world solutions by integrating emerging AI technologies.

What are your ambitions for AI? How do you plan to change the world?

I believe that integrating AI with IoT technologies for monitoring environmental parameters will create a more robust and practical system, overcoming some of the challenges surrounded by an IoT system alone. By leveraging low-cost, off the shelf devices, I believe that this approach can establish a wider network for monitoring water quality parameters, allowing for a system of adaptive management to be established. Additionally, it empowers citizen scientists to monitor their own local waterways, increasing the chances of accountability for those responsible for pollution.
