What expertise will you bring to AI?

I hold a BSc International Business Management and a MSc in Digital Business from Newcastle University Business School. My academic journey has been driven by a passion for exploring the transformative potential of AI in both business and society. During my undergraduate studies, I developed expertise in global corporate strategies, operations, project management, and finance. Building on this foundation, my postgraduate studies focused on digitalization and innovation management, with a particular interest in AI applications. My MSc dissertation investigated the impact of AI on the mental health care (MHC) applications market, uncovering important links between users' AI-related knowledge and their perceptions of efficiency, accessibility, and associated risks.

Research Interests

Besides my fascination with AI in mental health, my research interest lies in the utilisation of this technology for business, with particular emphasis on banking and finance, stemming from my academic background. This fascination is further fueled by my desire to contribute to society and facilitate the business landscape simultaneously. Therefore, while I have previously explored AI in MHC, aiming at its inclusivity, my current research aspirations are more aligned with socially responsible business digitalisation, specifically in the financial sector.

Accordingly, while financial institutions are increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence, this technology is considerably more responsible for people's lives, as reflected in AI-driven credit scoring, fraud detection, and even financial advisory. Nevertheless, despite these advancements' great potential, they also introduce considerable ethical and societal issues, encompassing data biases, accountability, and transparency, that may amplify the marginalisation of underrepresented communities and thus strengthen social inequalities.

Therefore, my research objectives are to explore the social dynamics of AI implementations in banking to facilitate inclusivity and equality in service provision. Thus, by focusing on how AI technologies can be designed and utilised while fostering the above values, my research aims to bridge the gap between technological advancement and social responsibility, delivering a comprehensive framework for these tools' fairness, accountability and transparency. Ultimately, my work will ensure AI-powered fintech optimises business processes and catalyses positive social change, empowering all financial sector stakeholders to co-create and benefit from these advancements equally.

What made you want to apply for CCAI?

I applied to our CDT because the centre's focus on citizen-centred AI, among others in the work and organisation field, aligns with my research interests and desire to use knowledge and technology for positive change. Therefore, I was excited to collaborate with like-minded researchers and practitioners committed to ethical and sustainable innovation.

Additionally, I was attracted by the unique cohort system, which has already proven to create a supportive environment significantly different from other research-based studies I had considered. Accordingly, collaborating with fellow PhD candidates from diverse backgrounds fosters community and enriches my experience through shared knowledge and diverse perspectives.

Finally, the placement opportunities provided by the centre further supported my application decision, as they will allow me to enhance my academic and professional competencies simultaneously.

What are your ambitions for AI? How do you plan to change the world?

My ambition for AI is to harness its transformative power within the financial sector while promoting not only technological change but societal responsibility for its progress. Therefore, with my research, I aim to ensure that this impact is equitable and concentrate on how AI-powered fintech can address inequalities rather than exacerbate them. Accordingly, by actively promoting communities' involvement in co-creating such advancements, my research will guide financial institutions through more accessible and fair practices in this domain.

Therefore, a significant part of my investigation will be dedicated to understanding the broader societal effects of AI in finance, particularly its role in perpetuating or reducing bias. This objective is motivated by the belief that financial institutions are accountable for ensuring their AI systems meet societal norms and do not exclude underrepresented communities from essential services. With this approach, I aim to contribute to citizen-centred AI banking solutions that prioritise all segments of society equally, thereby countering marginalisation and exclusion.

By doing so, I aim to empower both policymakers and institutions to make decisions that ensure technological advancements offered by AI do not come at the expense of vulnerable populations but instead create opportunities for everyone. Therefore, by balancing business efficiency and societal good, my research will help shape a future of banking where AI fosters innovation while being resistant to bias.
