Best of British Nursing

Northumbria University is a major centre for nursing and healthcare education, training and research. The University’s international reputation as a leading British university is the result of a distinctive combination of outstanding academic research and teaching, innovative programmes, traditional values and social and cultural diversity.

Through innovative, professional healthcare courses informed by research and delivered by experienced clinical experts, students experience some of the highest standards of education available to become caring and compassionate health professionals.

Our programmes constantly evolve and develop to ensure they comfortably exceed the latest government and professional body requirements, and our placement areas are regularly and rigorously audited to ensure they meet the standards required by professional bodies.

Professional Recognition

Our excellence in Nursing practice has been recognised in many ways, including:

  • Northumbria was the first university in the UK to have pre-registration nursing programmes accredited by the Royal College of Nursing.
  • Our pre-registration Nursing and Midwifery programmes are approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • We are the three-time winner of Nurse Education Provider of the Year (Post Registration) title at the Student Nursing Times Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
  • Ranked top 15 in the UK for Nursing (Sunday Times University Guide 2015)
  • Ranked 3rd in the UK for Physiotherapy (Complete University Guide 2015).
  • Northumbria is ranked in the top quartile in the UK for its research power in Allied Health Sciences and Nursing, with more than 80% of research activity rated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (REF 2014)

Succesful Partnerships

The University has close partnerships with policy makers, professional bodies, practitioners and healthcare providers regionally, nationally and internationally. It  has forged successful partnerships with universities and organisations in several countries to support the development of national nursing practice and nurse education. These initiatives have involved providing expertise, curriculum development and staff development for clients and partners. Examples of our work include:

  • We developed a new nurse education curriculum and developed training for around 1,000 of Egypt’s senior nurse teachers under a national nurse transformation programme funded by the EU.
  • As a member of a UK-Ghana consortium we supported the establishment of a national post-basic paediatric nursing course.
  • For several years we have run degree programmes in nursing practice development in association with a partner university in Malaysia.
  • Our long-standing partnership with a Chinese university nursing department had led to changes in the local nursing curriculum. This has been highlighted by the Chinese Ministry of Education as an example of good practice in developing the healthcare workforce in China.
