At Northumbria’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, we empower you to understand the world – and shape its future. Whether you’re passionate about culture, identity, literature, global politics, justice, or communication, you’ll join a vibrant academic community where ideas lead to real-world impact.

Our subjects are diverse – from history to criminology, English to international relations. But all our disciplines have one common purpose – they explore how we understand ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

RESEARCH-LED TEACHING

The richness and breadth of our subjects is underpinned by a strong research culture, with teaching and research rooted in today’s most pressing themes – from gender and popular culture and activism to global development and criminal justice reform. Our staff are active researchers and practitioners, bringing the latest insights directly into the classroom from day one, through contemporary case studies and real-world examples.

LEARNING BY EXPERIENCE

Your learning is grounded in real issues and supported by practical experiences. Through placements, volunteering, internships, and international exchanges, you’ll gain insight and skills in settings like youth justice teams, schools, prisons, cultural organisations, and parliamentary offices.

STRONG CULTURAL PARTNERSHIPS

Your learning is always connected to the world beyond university. We work closely with a wide range of partners and collaborators – from the BBC and ITV Tyne Tees to New Writing North, Hachette, the British Council, the Environment Agency and the Youth Offending Team – ensuring your studies are relevant and impactful.

Whether you want to write, teach, campaign, research, or lead – the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Northumbria will prepare you to ask the big questions, spark meaningful conversations, and build a career that matters.
