Welcome to The Bridge

Not everyone takes a straight path into higher education, and you don't have to. The Bridge is a new route into a Northumbria University degree, made for people who don't yet have the UCAS points for a standard or foundation-year start. It offers flexible, employment-focused study at foundation level, with a clear route into a full Northumbria degree over four years. You'll study on two fixed days each week from our Coach Lane Campus in Newcastle upon Tyne, with a blend of in-person and online learning that fits around work and family commitments. You'll be a Northumbria student from the start, with teaching and support designed to build your confidence as well as your knowledge. If university has felt out of reach, this is the route that changes that.

The Bridge is a new route into a Northumbria University degree for adults who don't have the traditional qualifications usually needed to start. You study at foundation level first, then progress onto a full degree - four years in total, with fixed study days each week and a mix of in-person and online learning.

No. The Bridge doesn't require A-levels or UCAS points.

Level 2 Maths and English may be required for entry

What matters is your motivation to commit to study and progress towards a full Northumbria degree.

It's for adults who are ready to study but haven't had a traditional route in, including people not currently in education, employment or training, those returning to study after time away, and people looking to change career. It's also designed for anyone balancing work or caring responsibilities who needs study that fits around their life.

The first subjects available from November 2026 are Business and Digital Technologies. Further subjects will follow, aligned to the skills the North East economy needs most.

You'll study on two fixed days each week, with a blend of in-person teaching and online learning, throughout your four-year programme. This structure is designed to fit around work and family commitments.

Teaching takes place at Northumbria's Coach Lane Campus in Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Bridge has three intake points each year - November, February and June, so you can start when you're ready rather than waiting for a single annual enrolment date.

Yes, you'll be a Northumbria student from day one, with teaching and support designed to build your confidence as well as your knowledge.

You'll receive enhanced levels of support and guidance throughout, recognising that many learners will have spent time away from formal education.

Yes. The Bridge starts at foundation level and provides a clear, supported route through to a full Northumbria University degree over four years.

Year 1 tuition fees for 2026/7* entry at Northumbria for standard degrees are £9,790.

Year 1 tuition fees for extended degrees are £5,760* (£9,790* on Engineering and Computing courses).

Applications will soon open for 2026 entry. You will apply direct on the University website from the relevant course page. Following the submission of your application, your application will be assessed by our Admissions Team and you will have a follow up call or interview before the outcome of your application is shared with you. If we are able to offer you a place, we will confirm your next steps to enrolment.
