Northumbria alumnus Professor Tony Ho, Chair Professor of Multimedia Security at the University of Surrey, returned to campus in April to give a research seminar to students and staff.

Whilst here, he also invited Northumbria staff to Surrey to share their research interests and agreed to mentor young Northumbria academics.

Tony’s research interests include image forensics, digital watermarking and satellite remote sensing and he works with external partners, including the police, to improve their multimedia security. The seminar focused on data hiding techniques, including using images to hide secret messages, a topic that Northumbria’s undergraduate and postgraduate students are currently working on.

Professor Ho was born in Hong Kong, and moved to the UK to study at Newcastle Polytechnic, Northumbria’s predecessor. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physical Electronics in 1979. Tony thoroughly enjoyed being back in Newcastle and seeing the changes that had been made on campus, as well recalling fondly his student days sharing a house in Benwell.

Speaking of his experience of giving back to Northumbria University he commented:

“I volunteered to give a research seminar because Northumbria was my first home. I have very fond memories of my time here so I was happy to do anything I could to give back to the University”.

Giving a research seminar or guest lecture based on your own personal and professional experience is just one of the many ways that alumni can volunteer to help Northumbria and our students. Other examples include providing an undergraduate placement, assisting at a University event, mentoring students, contributing an alumni profile or providing careers guidance. If you are interested in volunteering, you can find more information and or register your interest via our online registration form here.
