Booking your event with Venues at Northumbria opens the door to a dedicated and experienced team of event professionals, keen to instil Northumbria’s University’s ethos on sustainability into your next event. We benefit from a wide range of resources and experts on campus which are included as standard in many of our Event Packages.
Examples of services include:
- Digital Signage to reduce printed items.
- Plant-Based Menus to reduce the carbon footprint of your catering order.
- A ‘Sustainability Workshop’ session, where you can speak with your event manager about which of the SDGs are important to you and how you can support in achieving your organisations green goals.
- Carbon Literacy – we’re on our way to becoming a fully carbon literate team.
- We are members of the AVS Sustainability Focus Group and NewcastleGateshead Sustainable Event Roundtable, allowing us to collaborate with other Academic and Newcastle-based organisations, sharing best practice and advise across the sector and region.
- Improving event Accessibility and Inclusivity.
- Sustainable policy, that we as part of Northumbria University adhere to. Please see policies below:
In addition to these free services, we can also support or lead in more advanced reporting and event management. Speak with your Event Manager about the following ‘add-ons’:
- Carbon footprint your event. We have experience using the TRACE platform by ISLA to collate data and calculate the carbon footprint of your event.
- Delegate Travel can be one of the largest contributions of carbon for an event. Encouraging public transport use is a great way to this. Check out the You.Smart.Thing platform for more information about helping your delegates find the most carbon-conscious route from home to venue.
We have previously been awarded the GOLD Green Tourism award and are currently awaiting grading for 2025. Of those businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry that put themselves forward for Green Tourism’s third-party verification, around one-third achieve Gold.
What achieving our Green Tourism award means:
We are supported in our sustainability practices, and in our improvement journey by the world-leading sustainability accreditation partner, Green Tourism.
Achieving a Green Tourism award means that our sustainability practices have been assessed and verified by a credible partner. It shows that we have an ongoing commitment:
- to sustainability standards and practices
- to work responsibly, ethically, and sustainably
- to contribute to our community
- to reduce our impact on the environment, and
- to be accessible and inclusive to all visitors and staff.
Green Tourism has assessed our business against 15 sustainability criteria grouped under the pillars of People, Places and Planet. These consider the social, economic, and environmental actions we undertake, providing a holistic assessment of our sustainability performance.
