Multispectral imaging analysis in cultural heritage: The Hexham Abbey panel case, with reference to future AI data validation.

The focus of this webinar will be Dr Charis Theodorakopoulos's research with Hexham Abbey in identifying a painting discovered in a back room of the Abbey. The surface was covered over but Charis was able to discover that this was actually part of a series of mediaeval panel paintings (known as the 'Dance of Death' series).

In February 2017, a panel painting bearing a dark and heavily discoloured image was discovered languishing in a corner of the triforium of the Abbey, having been missing since the 1990’s. This latter painting, in very poor condition, is believed to be part of the sequence – perhaps with many others now lost – and represents a ‘caller’ or commentator for the sequence.

A paper about the work, published by the Hexham Local History Society, is available online here.
