Prestigious award ceremony hosted at Northumbria

Students from Northumbria University, Newcastle celebrated their success last month at prestigious concrete project awards hosted at the institution last month.

Thomas Lamb, a final year Construction Management student at Northumbria, was amongst the winners at the Outstanding Concrete Project Awards, pushing the boundaries of his knowledge to be awarded Outstanding Student Project in the Concrete Modelling and Design awards category.

His project, which involved improving the resistance of concrete by adding synthetic fibres was described as ‘extremely informative’ and has ‘many practical uses’.

This was not the only success of the night for Northumbria however, with a team entry from first year BEng Civil students, awarded second place for their Ultra High Performance Concrete uses project in the Concrete Materials Research awards category.

A special commendation was also noted for final year Construction Project Management student, Jack Grieve who investigated the early compressive strength of concrete containing different cement mixes.

Dr Alan Richardson, Reader in Mechanical Construction and Engineering, said: “Thomas Lamb went way beyond his taught programme to incorporate the engineering principles required to design and test his samples. The professionalism shown by Tom throughout his research project will put him in good stead for many life experiences.

The quality of all of the student entries were of a very high standard and choosing a winner was an extremely difficult task, which was undertaken by independent examiners from the Concrete Society and the IStructE.

Congratulations to all students who submitted their work for assessment. Every one of you should be proud of your efforts and my sincere thanks go to Sherburn Stone (Durham) and the ISTructE for sponsoring the event and providing generous prizes.”

Now in its second year of running the Outstanding Concrete Project Awards, which is part of The Northern Regions Committee for The Concrete Society and the Institution of Structural Engineers, is proving to be a growing success. Entries for the awards were received from Durham, Teesside and Northumbria Universities.
