Take your career in school to the next level with this Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship (STAA). This apprenticeship offers a new opportunity for colleagues currently working in support roles in schools (e.g: Teaching Assistants, Special Support Assistants, Learning Mentors) to further specialise in either SEND, SEMH or Curriculum Development.

Career progression for experienced Teaching Assistants.

  • Over 24 months, this work-based training programme ensures you continue to earn while you learn and leads to a nationally recognised Level 5 qualification.
  • This is a programme that builds on your existing skills and experience to ensure you continue to make a difference to the education of children and young people.
  • It gives you the opportunity to develop the specialist knowledge required to support and lead inter-professional interventions across the school.
  • You will spend one day each week engaged in ‘Off the job’ training and be able to immediately apply this in your workplace.
  • This Level 5 qualification also opens a pathway to further study with Northumbria for a one year, top-up to Level 6 and a degree in Education Studies.

For Employers: A unique opportunity to develop your workforce.

This apprenticeship is a cost-effective way to:

  • Upskill your current workforce
  • Address skills shortages and support long school improvement initiatives
  • Make the most of your Apprenticeship Levy funding
  • Partner with an experienced, supportive academic team at Northumbria University. We work closely with Trusts, local authorities and third-sector organisations to deliver tailored, high-quality learning that meets both professional standards and service needs.
