Northumbria Law School brings spirit of collaboration to Newcastle

Northumbria University, Newcastle, is proud to be hosting the 51st Annual Conference of the Association of Law Teachers (ALT).

Entitled Promoting Collaboration, this year’s event runs from 20th to 22nd March is a major highlight in the conference calendar for academics with an interest in legal education set to attract law academics from across the UK. It will include a series of high profile lectures, some of which will be open to the public, discussions on submitted papers and conference dinners to be held at The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Sage Gateshead.

Delegates will examine how legal educators and trainers can work together. They will also explore collaborative links between legal education and the legal profession, law students, other professions and the community.

A public lecture will be given by Mike Neary, Professor of Sociology at the University of Lincoln, on Student as Producer - challenging the concept of student as consumer and the pedagogy of debt. The lecture will take place on March 21 at 2pm in Northumbria University’s City Campus East 1 building.

Principal lecturer at Northumbria Law School Cath Sylvester said: “The ALT is an important and popular conference for the law teaching profession across the UK and naturally we are delighted that we are this year’s hosts. With the speakers we have and the papers submitted it promises to be highly engaging and informative for all those who attend.”

The conference will be organised around a series of streams which will include, but are not restricted to:

1. Collaboration with the legal profession and providers of legal services

2. Interdisciplinary, international or non-legal professional collaborations

3. Collaboration with the community (recipients of legal services) or students (recipients of legal education)

4.  Facilitating collaboration through technology

5. Sharing good practice in legal education and training and collaborative research projects
