Business school explore China opportunities for Northern Powerhouse Initiatives

Leading business figures from China and the UK delivered keynote speeches at Newcastle Business School recently, discussing the future of the two countries and encouraging greater collaboration. There was also a special focus on bringing two national strategies together, such as the U.K.’s Northern Powerhouse initiative, and China’s One Belt One Road Strategy. Professor Yu Xiong, the Chair of Technology and Operations Management of Newcastle Business School, Chaired this workshop.

The workshop was part of the China Business Development Programme North East, which has provided funding to help graduates with skills, knowledge and expertise to thrive in a complex international business environment.

Sir Richard Heygate delivered a talk entitled One Belt One Road: A strategy will change the world. Chiefly known for creating the world’s first online ATM and for a long and distinguished career with McKinsey & Company, Sir Richard is currently a partner with SinoFortone Group. Sir Richard has highlighted the importance of working with China, and has encouraged the business community to explore more collaboration with China.

Also providing expertise was Mr Yi Meng, President of YSUM Group, former Chief Operating Officer of Morgan Stanley China, Deputy Chair of Standard Chartered Asia, and President of Standard Chartered China. He focused on how North East businesses can collaborate more with partners in China, he provided many solutions when developing actual business with China.

Professor Yu Xiong said: “China represents huge opportunity for regional businesses, so I am delighted to have such eminent and highly respected speakers attend this workshop. Along with all our other experts this promises to be a hugely insightful and engaging event.”

Other guest speakers included Chris Fraser OBE, who has pioneered China outbound investment into the UK from the early 2000s, Dr. Nick Rousseau, Managing Director of Unconventional Connections Ltd and James Andrews, Director of Clayton Street Properties.  Dr. Jonathan Eaton from Newcastle College facilitated the panel discussion.

Newcastle Business School was named Business School of the Year in the THE Education Awards for 2015.
