Northumbria University has ranked joint top in a survey for offering the UK’s best city for university nightlife, according to the latest Which? University student survey.
Which? surveyed more than 11,000 current students for its 2016 survey to see how they rated aspects of life in their chosen universities and cities. The results ranked Northumbria and Newcastle Universities – both based in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne – joint top for nightlife.
Northumbria students praised the diversity of the city’s nightlife, commenting on the vast range of venues, music and comedy options available to students living in the city. As one respondent commented “Newcastle nightlife is crazy. You can go out from Monday to Sunday, there is always something going on.”
It is the fifth time in the last seven years that Newcastle has been rated as the UK’s best city for students. MSN awarded the title to the city in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and it was awarded again in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2014.
Marketing Management student, Bethany Stoppard-Wood, moved to Newcastle from Wakefield to study at Northumbria in 2013. She fully agrees with the survey results. “I moved to Newcastle because it’s such a vibrant, developing city and it definitely didn’t disappoint,” she said.
“There’s a lot to see and do with many cultural attractions including the Baltic Art Gallery on view from the Quayside. Other fun places to visit are the theatre, the Metro Centre for a bit of shopping and Tynemouth Beach which is great for some seaside fish and chips! It can be very daunting moving away from home, but I would definitely recommend Newcastle as a student friendly city and to make the most of everything it has to offer. I now consider Newcastle my second home!”
As well as its success in the Which? survey, Northumbria is also ranked top 20 in the UK for overall student experience according to Times Higher Education’s annual student experience survey.
The University recently announced it was investing a massive £52 million in its Newcastle city campus over the next two years to bring even better facilities to its students. A new Student Central Zone will bring all student-facing services together in one area in the heart of the campus. Two new state-of-the-art buildings will be constructed for students on computing and architecture courses and major renovations are also planned for the University’s Ellison and Lipman buildings.
