Students help shift expectations of art and education with unique exhibition

26th August 2016

Northumbria will next week host an innovative end-of-year show by Masters’ students working across Fine Art and Education.

Fine Art And Education 1 - EmbedTilt_Shift will launch at the University’s Gallery North on 31 August. The exhibition celebrates the creative development of MA Fine Art and Education students across the academic year as artists, teachers and educators. Tilting approaches, they have explored a wide range of possibilities, while shifting focus, has resulted in collaboration, participation and exciting transformation over the course of this distinctive MA – hence the tile of the exhibition.

Dr Judy Thomas, Programme Leader MA Fine Art and Education, said: “The students have worked extremely hard and this has resulted in an exciting exhibition, demonstrating a diversity of creative practice and innovative development achieved through a sense of play.

“The course has enabled them to expand and experiment, allowing them to take risks and challenge their previous presumptions of tradition and medium. They have achieved this by inviting audience interaction, utilising the potential of video, performance and installation as tools of communication.

Fine Art And Education 5 - Embed“This indicates a broadening awareness and consideration to how their work is received within a social context. This also reflects their roles as Artist Teachers and the generosity with which they share their enthusiasm and knowledge within their learning environments. It has also resulted in a very exciting show.”

The MA Fine Art and Education course is a unique collaboration between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria. This distinctive postgraduate experience, delivered in partnership, supports working teachers and educationalists to establish or enhance their combined practices as artist and facilitator at masters’ level. Students make and talk about art through a dynamic, student-led process framed within the context of contemporary art alongside learning and teaching enquiry. The crucial relationship between a personal creative practice and the methods of teaching art are extended through artist-led projects and gallery learning as well as the more individual traditions of a studio practice.

Tilt_Shift launches at Gallery North on Northumbria’s city campus with a private viewing from 6pm-8pm on 31 August. The exhibition is part of this year’s REVEAL 2016 end of year degree shows, which included work by graduates from the University’s creative courses, such as Architecture, Art, Design, and Media.
