Hannah Martin - Geography and Environmental Sciences

 PhD researcher Hannah Martin featured on Sky's Landscape Artist of the Year when the show came to Newcastle and Gateshead for episode five of this year's series.

With this year's contestants tasked with painting the iconic Tyne Bridge, Hannah was able to provide some key background information about the history, culture and identity of the structure.

Professor Jason Ellis - Psychology

Professor of Psychology and Director of the Northumbria Centre for Sleep Research Jason Ellis appeared on the Channel 5 documentary The Science of Sleep: How to Sleep Better.

The two-part series examined why so many people in the UK struggle with sleep.

In September, Northumbria historian Dr Laura O'Brien featured on the BBC Radio 4 Podcast You're Dead To Me.

Jean, who is Director of Northumbria's University Art Gallery, was interviewed for BBC Radio 4's Today programme about an exhibition of Norman Cornish's work which has recently gone on display at Bowes Museum.

Dr Nauman Aslam - Computer and Information Sciences

Nauman was interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle, giving his expert opinion on the cyber-attack which was launched on the Labour Party's web services in November.

Claire Bessant - Northumbria Law School

Solicitor and Associate Professor Claire Bessant was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 for it's Women's Hour Parenting Podcast about the issue of 'sharenting' - in which parents share information about their children on social media.

Claire compiled her top six tips for parents to consider when sharing photos and videos online.

Professor Mike Rowe - Social Sciences

Criminologist Professor Mike Rowe was interviewed by Research Professional about his success in winning an Economic and Social Research Council Research Grant worth £329,384 for his proposal to study public perceptions of police.

In the interview he gives his advice to anyone applying for funding for academic projects, including making time to discuss ideas, however whimsical they may at first appear.

Paolo Gerli - Newcastle Business School

Doctoral Researcher and member of Northumbria's Digital Economy and Innovation Research Group Paolo Gerli was interviewed by Wired magazine for a news article about the Labour party's plans for state-owned broadband.

He was quoted in the article which was published in the run-up to the general election and set out how the failure of BT and its competitors shows why state intervention may be needed when it comes to broadband.

Waitman Beorn - Humanities

Senior Lecturer in History Waitman Beorn recently had two articles published by high profile US news publications.

His article 'The War-Crimes Presidency' was published by The New Republic magazine, in which he discussed President Trump's attitude towards the US military and war crimes. Read the New Republic article online here.

A second piece by Dr Beorn entitled 'Here’s what a split-second combat decision looks like. I didn’t need to murder' was published by The Washington Post. Dr Ali Malik - Social Sciences

Criminology and Criminal Justice Lecturer Dr Ali Malik joined forces with Dr Kath Murray of the University of Edinburgh to write an article for Scottish newspaper The Herald.

The article explored the impact of the resignation of Scottish Police Authority chair Susan Deacon.

Professor Alfredo Moscardini, Professor Rebecca Strachan and Dr Tetyana Vlasova - Computer and Information Sciences

Professors Moscardini, Strachan and Dr Vlasova represented Northumbria University at the British Council International Education Conference 2019 in Edinburgh in December.

Together they presented a session which provided a hands-on exploration of how a systems approach, in which you to step back and see the whole picture rather than focusing on the individual parts, can be used to develop successful and meaningful partnerships. Between them the team have a wealth of experience in education, systems thinking and working with international partnerships across the globe.

The session started with a short overview of what makes a successful partnership, followed by a series of interactive discussions exploring how to construct a ‘common vision’ using a systems approach.

Professor Alister Scott - Geography and Environmental Sciences

Alister was the headline speaker at the Liveable Cities and Urban Nature seminar, in Uppsala, Sweden.

The seminar was organised by engineering, design and consultancy company Ramboll and SLU Urban Futures - a sustainable urban development research collaboration based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Professor Scott spoke about his take on local cases and frontrunners in urban nature from Uppsala and Tierp, following work he has been carrying out with key Swedish agencies and researchers on urban nature and planning.

Professor Chris Newman - Northumbria Law School

Chris Newman, Professor of Space Law and Policy at Northumbria, delivered a talk entitled Seeking Celestial Eden, Protecting the space environment at TEDxWarwick.

The talk breaks down the moral and legal questions which underscore the New Space Age.

Starting with the seemingly simple question of ‘Who owns the moon?’, this talk delves into the many ethical and legal intricacies of space exploration, space mining and future interplanetary colonisation.
