Northumbria subjects climb up the global rankings

Northumbria University is seeing further improvements in its international profile, with four subject areas featuring in Times Higher Education’s world rankings for the first time.

After publishing its world rankings for universities last month, Times Higher Education has today released the first of four announcements ranking 11 different subject areas (Wednesday 17 October).

Law at Northumbria is rated as being in the top 151+ courses offered by universities worldwide. The University’s Education, Business and Economics courses are all rated within the 301-400 best in the world and Social Sciences subjects – which incorporates sociology, geography, media and communication studies – feature in the top 401-500 available globally.

The subjects are ranked by measuring performance in 13 areas, covering teaching and the learning environment; the volume, income and reputation from research and the influence of this research by the number of times it is cited. The rankings also consider the international outlook of a university and how much income it generates from industrial relationships.

The improved performance of these subject areas follows Northumbria’s significant rise in Times Higher’s World University Rankings last month. Northumbria is now ranked within the top 401-500 of more than 1,200 universities worldwide.

Professor Andrew Wathey CBE, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive at Northumbria University, said: “We are delighted to see the result of many years of investment in quality of research and teaching coming to fruition. Our arts, humanities, engineering and technology subject areas have been featured in the THE World rankings for some time, but the inclusion of these disciplines is a notable next step."

Times Higher will release its rankings for arts and humanities courses later this month, with further announcements in November covering Life and Physical Sciences, Health, Psychology, Engineering and Technology and Computer Science.
