Empowering Careers through Degree Apprenticeships at Northumbria University
Northumbria University’s Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship blends academic study with hands-on industry experience, equipping students with essential skills for a successful career. Allowing apprentices to earn while they learn, covering key areas like structural analysis, geotechnics, and transportation design.
Amelia Bewick, a trainee cost manager at Turner & Townsend, exemplifies the programmes impact. Since 2023, she has balanced her studies at Northumbria with real-world projects, including water treatment works and procurement roles. Her experience highlights how degree apprenticeships build confidence, expertise, and career opportunities.
Discover more about Amelia's journey:
In 2021, Amelia has just finished her A Levels at a Newcastle sixth form and felt uncertain about what her next steps should be. Although her interests were broad, university didn't appeal to her. A careers advisor suggested the construction industry, and after talking to her cousin who worked for a housebuilder, she learned about the variety of roles and the option of a degree apprenticeship.
She gained some initial work experience at Turner & Townsend, at a housing developer and at a planning firm, opportunities which made her glimpse the potential within the industry. In 2023, she began a cost management apprenticeship at Turner & Townsend, balancing full time work with degree studies at Northumbria University.
Over the past two years, she has worked on projects like the Mosswood water treatment works and joined Northumbrian Water's procurement and commercial team. She feels that these experiences have significantly boosted her professional skills and confidence. She now manages the contract system for her project and has deepened her understanding of NEC contracts through training and the opportunity to sit in on board meetings.
