Founded in 1902, NJNU is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China, and has become research-intensive and comprehensive university which is regarded as a leading National Key University designated by China's former Project 211Plan 111, and Double First Class University Plan. The 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked NJNU 401st-500th globally.

Consisting of 28 colleges and schools, NJNU boasts a student population of 18,369 undergraduates and 12,564 postgraduate students, including 1,525 doctoral candidates. As a relatively selective university, NJNU only admits domestic students who score in the top 5% (95th percentile) in the National  College Entrance Examination. 

Northumbria University and Nanjing Normal University collaborate to deliver an undergraduate programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
