Travelteer – Sri Lanka

Volunteer in Sri Lanka. Choose from a range of volunteering programmes to make a difference to the environment or the community. Read more about the Travelteer Sri Lanka programme.

These programmes are not credit bearing, so they do not need to be linked directly to your degree programme. However, we encourage you to consider which of the programmes may suit your current or future studies, and what you think might be advantageous to your future career.

Note: you can choose to do the coast-to-coast tour as part of your volunteering experience. If you choose to do this, we ask that you complete a minimum of a 2-week volunteering programme, plus the coast-to-coast tour.  Making your trip 3-weeks (minimum) in total.

When

Flexible start dates are available from January 2026 to August 2027, subject to availability with Travelteer.

You can choose up to a 4-week programme.  To be eligible for funding you must complete a minimum 2-week programme.  All programmes must be completed by 31st August 2027.

Turing funding available

The amounts shown below apply per placement, and depend on the length of your programme and whether you meet the Widening Participation criteria.

Whether you receive each grant, and how much, depends on whether you meet the Widening Participation criteria. Check the Widening Participation criteria information page for further details.

The travel grant is paid as a reimbursement, up to the stated amount. This means you pay for your travel yourself and then submit your invoices to Northumbria for reimbursement. For example, if your travel costs £600, you will receive £600. If your travel costs £1,000, you will receive £905, as this is the maximum amount available.

The readiness to travel grant is paid as a reimbursement of up to £43 in total. You can be reimbursed for any of the following items, after you submit receipts to Northumbria:

  • Passport, new or renewal (only if a purchase or renewal is required for this trip)
  • Visa applications and reasonable associated costs, such as translated documents, travel to visa appointments, and police certificates
  • Study permits
  • Vaccines
  • Travel insurance (single trip to destination only)
  • Medical certificates

Programme fee

Programme fee information can be found on the Travelteer website.

You are responsible for paying Travelteer directly. The programme fee can be partially covered by the Cost of Living grant.

  • 24-hour support from the Travelteer team
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the week
  • Private transport to and from the programme
  • Volunteer pack
