History research at Northumbria spans more than 700 years, and six continents. Since 2014, we have extended our geographical breadth (most recently to Africa, India and the Middle East), and have deliberately expanded in the pre-1600 period and in contemporary history. Our team includes business, cultural, environmental, gender, migration, political, religious and social historians.

Our particular areas of thematic strength are exemplified in our six research groups, Global and Transnational History, Histories of Activism, Environmental Humanities, American Studies, Conflict and Society, and Medieval and Early Modern Studies.

Our research is also characterised by a commitment to collaboration. We work with local, national and international partners to understand and address contemporary challenges through knowledge of the past. Through our Institute of Humanities we collaborate with scholars across disciplinary boundaries.
