SP6009 - Coaching Concepts and Behaviour

What will I learn on this module?

Coaching Concepts and Behaviour builds upon knowledge introduced at Level 4 (i.e., SP0400) and Level 5 (i.e., SP0500) including key coaching skills (e.g., planning, risk assessment), coaching practice behaviours (e.g., questioning, instruction) and athlete outcomes (e.g., wellbeing, skill learning). You will learn to critically appreciate how these skills, practices and outcomes are influenced by the interrelationship of personal, social and contextual factors within the holistic coaching process. In addition, you will learn how to plan, deliver and critically review coaching practice using a range of assessment tools in line with current research findings and UKCC Level 2/3 coaching award criteria.

How will I learn on this module?

Coaching Concepts and Behaviour builds upon the learning and teaching approaches adopted at Level 4 (i.e., SP0400) and Level 5 (i.e., SP0500). You will develop your ability to apply theory to practice through a combination of lectures, seminar activities, practical workshops, demonstrations, supervised practice time and self-directed activities. Taught content will be largely student-led, with an emphasis placed on you discussing and engaging in reasoned debate about your own and other’s context-specific planning, delivering and reviewing of coaching practice. Emphasis will also be placed on you engaging in self-directed external coaching to ensure you acquire knowledge, skills and qualities most relevant to your own interests and ambitions in coaching.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported through directed learning worksheets, electronic and interactive content via the Electronic Learning Portal (eLP), lectures, an electronic reading list and 1-1 support from an academic tutor. You will be expected to be proactive in identifying and raising issues for discussion with the module leader and your guidance tutor in particular. These should be prompted by your reading, planning, practice and review related to the module’s content. In addition, you will be able to take advantage of the University Library’s Skills Plus programme as you develop your skills as an undergraduate researcher. Specific tutor support and access to facilities (e.g., Sport Central, performance analysis labs.) will be given to enable you to develop your coaching practice and analytical skills. You will also have access to a Discussion Board (via the eLP) where support from peers and module staff can be accessed in relation to the module’s content and assessments.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of effective coaching practice.
2. Reflect upon the utility of coaching philosophies and practice.
3. Critically examine coaching philosophies, coaching practice and moderators of effectiveness.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
4. Plan, design, deliver and critically review your own and other coaches’ sports coaching programmes and practices in relation to the needs of athletes and effective coaching practice.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Demonstrate knowledge and critical awareness of moral, ethical, legal and philosophical issues in sports coaching and the application of relevant theories and concepts to your own and other coaches’ contexts.

How will I be assessed?

1. Summative Assessment:
a. Viva interview (100%): critically interpret and develop strategies to address professional practice issues in a specific sport context (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

2. Formative Assessment: includes practical coaching, critical analysis (research-tutored and research-based) of appropriate case studies, and in-class individual and group presentations.

You will receive both tutor and peer feedback on the tasks supporting formative assessment.

Module abstract

Coaching Concepts and Behaviour seeks to develop a critical appreciation of the strategic role of the coach in diverse situations. You will critically examine coaching philosophy and ethical considerations specific to your own and other coaching contexts. The module adopts a critical approach, examining the process of coaching and notions of effective practice with reference to the complexities, challenges and opportunities inherent in different sporting domains. You will have the opportunity to develop research, enquiry and reflective practice skills through a hands-on study of coaching philosophy, coaching practice and their essential relationship in real-world settings. You will be assessed via a viva interview.
