Student Life / #IAmNorthumbria

Discover more about life in Newcastle and studying at Northumbria.

Your studies begin with an introduction to the global business environment, key marketing principles and financial decision-making, before diving deeper into diverse topics including creativity and innovation, the digital economy, emerging economies and strategic management and internationalisation.

You’ll learn through techniques that include problem-based learning in the experiential based modules. These address challenges from the real world of business, giving you the opportunity to develop your own approach and come up with viable solutions.

Academics will support you through all taught sessions, as well as when you’re planning your independent study time. In your fourth year, you have a choice. You can write a dissertation, for which we’ll encourage you to follow your own interests related to international business and management, and answer a relevant research question. Or, you can be part of a student group undertaking a consultancy project on a real-world, client-based problem supported by the Faculty’s Business Clinic.

During the four years of your course, you’ll be assessed through exams, written assignments and reports, as well as individual and group presentations. Your tutors will explain in detail how the marking works before you tackle your assignment. That way you’ll fully understand what’s expected of you before you start.

Newcastle Business School has a global reputation for delivering some of the best business management education in the UK. Our business staff include Fellows of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the British Academy of Management and lecturers who have taught at universities all over the world.

The School’s teaching team is always looking to explore new fields of knowledge and generate ground-breaking concepts and insights. Over 40% of our publication outputs and 60% of our impact case studies were assessed as internationally excellent or world leading in the REF 2014.

At Newcastle Business School you’ll experience a first-class education in a world-class environment. From our social spaces and hub areas to lecture theatres and exhibition spaces, our facilities are exceptional. For example, the 24/7 university library achieves some of the highest levels of student satisfaction in the UK and has held the Cabinet Office accreditation for Customer Service Excellence since 2010.

We’re also committed to helping you make the most of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) by embedding it throughout the course. Tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists are there to help you efficiently and thoroughly prepare for seminars and independent research. Lecture capture software means you can revise previously lectured material online in your time, as well as at your speed.

There are plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice through volunteering, internships and placements. This includes the Business Clinic that enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses.

360 Tour

As a professional and international School, the Newcastle Business School develops individuals to achieve leadership, management and employability potential through business relevant, research engaged education.

Northumbria University Library

At Northumbria, we take an enquiry-based, problem-solving approach, encouraging you to develop research skills like information literacy, sampling, statistical reporting and surveying. In the final year you’ll undertake a significant investigatory task that can be either a dissertation or consultancy project. This strong research ethos is one reason why Newcastle Business School was the eighth most improved business school in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Throughout the course your learning will be directly informed by the teaching team’s active research into their specialist subjects, as well as our three signature research themes that include digital business, strategic innovation and entrepreneurial leadership, and responsible business. Specific areas of research include financial crime, corporate reporting, social entrepreneurship, business ethics, economic development, emerging mobile technology and post-recession business strategy.

Employability is at the heart of our Business courses – with every module building the transferable skills you’ll need to move into graduate employment. In your first and second year, you’ll study modules in ‘Professional career development’ and ‘Managing people across borders’. Both will develop your employability and leadership potential, as well as help you plan for your career.

What’s more, our international work placement scheme will help boost your job prospects – with graduates going on to work for global brands such as Samsung, KPMG and Disney. Further examples of recent graduate progression from this course include a selling partner at John Lewis, a graduate management trainee at Taylor Wimpey Homes, a personal banker at global financial organisation Citibank and a digital marketing specialist at international communications agency Ogilvy.

Alternatively, a study year abroad will not only give you international awareness and enhance your CV but also increase your confidence and personal development. We have well-developed links with highly-respected institutions in Europe, North America, Mexico, Hong Kong and many other countries, opening a world of opportunities.

By the end of this course you’ll be in an excellent position to apply for graduate training schemes and roles in large corporations such as British Airways, Santander and Deloitte, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. Recent graduates have gone on to be entrepreneurs, business managers, consultants and analysts in different global sectors – fully equipped to see the world from an insightful, international perspective.
