The FdSc Nursing Associate Apprenticeship at Northumbria University provides a structured work-based route into healthcare, allowing you to earn while you learn. Designed to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, this course develops your skills in delivering safe, compassionate, and effective care across a range of healthcare settings.
Voted Apprenticeship Provider of the Year in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2024 we believe in giving our learners access to as many experiential learning opportunities as possible to enhance their practice. At Northumbria University you will engage in theory-based learning, practical training, simulated scenario-based learning and clinical placements, developing the competencies required to support registered nurses and other healthcare professionals. The curriculum covers key areas such as person-centred care, health promotion, and integrated care, ensuring you build the skills to work in hospital, community, and social care environments.
With a blended learning approach, including classroom sessions, digital resources, and clinical simulations, you develop confidence in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world practice. The course also emphasises teamwork, communication, and leadership, equipping you with the skills needed for career progression.
On completion, you gain a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Nursing Associate and can apply for professional registration with the NMC, opening doors to further study or career advancement within healthcare, including through our Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship (Adult) or our Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship (Child).

Practice 1 – Foundation of nursing associate practice (40 Credits)
This year-long practice module develops essential skills, values, and competencies for nursing associates, guided by the NMC Code (2018) and the NMC (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates. It emphasises a patient-centered, reflective, and evidence-based approach to care, enabling you to develop your skills in using research and guidelines to make informed clinical decisions. Reflection models, such as those by Gibbs and Kolb, are integrated to support your continuous self-assessment and growth.
Core NMC principles, including respect, compassion, and prioritising people, are central, with a focus on maintaining patient dignity and well-being. You will understand the role of people who use service users and carers (PUSC) feedback to improve care quality. Training in comprehensive nursing assessments highlights their importance in identifying patient needs and guiding effective care plans.
The module also stresses compassion, individuality, and advocacy for equitable access, preparing you to make reasonable adjustments for inclusive care. Safety is emphasised, with best practices consistently applied to protect patients across all care settings.
Innovative digital resources, such as SCRIPT and online learning packages (OSLs), support learning. Completion of all mandatory training is required before clinical placements, including basic life support, moving and handling, infection prevention and control, and the Oliver McGowan training on learning disability and autism.
You will learn to develop your electronic Practice Assessment Document (ePAD) and reflect on your personal and professional growth through coaching skills. This module emphasises the importance of family- and patient-centered care, as well as recovery-focused approaches, encouraging you to reflect on feedback from PUSC during placements. These foundational skills mark the beginning of your journey as an evidence-based practitioner.

Skills 1: Preparation for nursing associate practice (20 Credits)
The content of this skills module will be informed by the NMC (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates.
This module introduces the essential concepts of safe, professional practice and the core skills nursing associates need for effective communication and fundamental clinical procedures across a range of practice settings and age groups. You will develop hands-on clinical skills, including infection prevention and control, personal hygiene and nutritional care, and the measurement, recording, and interpretation of vital signs. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based communication tools and person-centred care, with specialised breakaway training to further strengthen your safe and effective practice.
Throughout the module, you will engage with a variety of resources and activities to support your development in these foundational nursing associate skills. Using both low- and high-fidelity simulation techniques with manikins and other clinical equipment, you will build your confidence in performing vital signs and other essential procedures necessary for safe, effective patient care.
As you progress through the module you will be encouraged to reflect on your own performance and assess your strengths and areas of skills development. This learning lays the foundation for safe, professional practice and ultimately a successful career as a nursing associate.

Theory 1 – Introduction to evidence-based practice (20 Credits)
This first theory module prepares and supports your transition to both university and placement. You will be introduced to the term Evidence Based Practice and learn how it underpins nursing associate care delivery which is embedded within the Standards of proficiency for nursing associates (Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC], 2024). You will spend time exploring the various types of evidence that throughout your programme you will be required to: a. source, b. appraise, and c. apply to your role as a nursing associate to underpin your care delivery. You will learn to appreciate that the terms health and ill health are multi-faceted and need to be understood from a professional; perspective as well as that of people of all ages and families including end of life care. You will discuss the role of the nursing associate in relation to optimising health at national, regional and local level. You will spend time identifying the rationale for anatomical, physiological and psycho-social assessments and the related support required by patients and families as part of a wider and more systematic approach to nursing associate care delivery. This will include links to pharmacological and non- pharmacological interventions. This will be introduced within the context of holistic care of a group of fictional people and families focusing on equality, diversity and inclusivity.

Skills 2: Mastery of essential nursing associate skills (20 Credits)
The content this skills module will be informed by the NMC (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates. As the second skills module undertaken, it will build on the concept of safe and effective practice which you have been introduced to in the previous Skills 1 module.
In this module, you will further develop your communication and clinical skills such as recognition of the deteriorating patient through learning to undertake essential assessment skills such as blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, assessing sputum and neurological assessments. You will continue to develop and learn about the importance of person and family-centred care. You will demonstrate your ability to practise in a holistic, individualised, person centred, non-judgemental, caring and sensitive manner, acknowledging the diverse needs of a contemporary society across the life span.
The learning opportunities in skills 2 will help you develop your abilities and confidence to demonstrate safe and effective practice and support the achievement of your nursing associate proficiencies for registration.

Theory 2: Life sciences in healthcare provision (20 Credits)
This second theory module will introduce you to a range of life sciences underpinning health care provision. You will explore anatomy and physiology and how understanding of key body systems enhances your ability to observe and assess individuals in terms of signs and symptoms of disease and illness, including physical and mental health conditions. In addition, you will learn about social and behavioural sciences and how these impact on wellbeing and influence life choices throughout the life span. This module will also help you develop your understanding of the role pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions play on health and illness and how individuals of all ages engage with personalised medication and treatments. You will also consider and explore the role of research and evidence in the provision of nursing associate care and how by adopting evidence-based practice adverse events can be minimised resulting in up-to-date management of treatments for patients and families. The content of this module will help you appreciate the complex and multi-factorial interactions that underpins disease and illness and how individuals respond to physical and psychological challenges during their lifespan. This information will help you to deliver safe, effective, compassionate and holistic care which is embedded within the Standards of proficiency for nursing associates (Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC], 2024). You will learn about concepts such as anatomy and physiology, genomics and diversity, pharmacology and biological principles associated with health and disease.

Practice 2: Transition to registered nursing associate practice (40 Credits)
The content of this practice module is informed by the NMC, (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates.
This module spans the whole of your second year and aims to support you to consolidate the knowledge and skills you have developed in year 1 of the programme as you transition towards registered nursing associate practice. The module will assist you to develop the requisite skills to provide and monitor safe, effective, evidence-based, person-centred care with increasing levels of confidence for a diverse range of patients who present with complex health and social care needs across the life span, who are cared for in a variety of health and social care contexts.
The module will build upon Practice module 1: Foundations of nursing associate practice to advance your professional development and BlackBoard Ultra you to enhance your proficiency in areas such as your ability to effectively work in partnership with patients, families and other healthcare professionals; understanding the professional roles and responsibilities of the multidisciplinary team; contributing to shared decision making in practice; recognising and responding to factors which may result in adverse outcomes; participating in strategies to improve patient safety/ enhance the quality of patient care; undertaking risk assessment; working within ethical and legal frameworks; acting as a role model to support and supervise the learning of junior colleagues; prioritising workload and delegating workload appropriately to others.
As you continue to develop your skills towards becoming an independent learner you will engage in self-directed study and seek out learning opportunities to advance your own knowledge and professional development further. You will also be proactively engaged in the professional development of others, supporting the learning of novice students/junior colleagues as appropriate. There will be opportunities to engage with Inter Professional Learning (IPL), learn from people who use services and carers (e.g. The LawnMowers Theatre Group) and complete relevant mandatory training that is appropriate at this stage of your programme. You will also be supported to expand on your reflective skills, which will help you to make links between theory and practice and develop strategies to identify your personal strengths and areas for development, whilst simultaneously building your resilience.
Your learning and professional development will advance throughout the module to ensure that you fulfil NMC (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates requirements, including achievement of professional values, mandatory proficiencies, annexe skills and summative practice assessments as set out in the ePAD. On successful completion of the module, you will be able to practice independently with minimal supervision, provide and monitor care and demonstrate increasing levels of knowledge, skills and confidence.

Skills 3 – Developing clinical, leadership and supervision skills (20 Credits)
This module will support your development in advancing your clinical skills, leadership skills and supervision skills, linked to the NMC (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates outlined in Annexe A and B.
The module will help you develop greater confidence to develop and practice your clinical skills, leadership skills and supervisory skills within a simulated environment. You will receive support through peer feedback and assessment as you enhance your knowledge and proficiency in advanced skills, such as performing 12-lead ECGs, wound care, and venepuncture.
As a supervisor in the practice environment your role is pivotal in the shaping of learning experiences and professional development of other learners. You will analyse the evidence supporting effective leadership approaches and skills necessary for MDT collaboration, focusing on improving patient outcomes and team dynamics. Evaluating your role involves assessing the key areas of coaching, facilitation of learning, assessment and feedback. You will develop your supervisory skills to support learners and lead on the delivery of care that has been prescribed by the registered nurse.
Within the module you will demonstrate resilience and emotional intelligence and be capable of explaining the rationale that influences your judgements and decisions in routine, complex and challenging situations. This will enable you to understand how to utilise evidence to underpin your practice. You will learn to apply and assess your leadership abilities in delivering safe and effective nursing associate care, managing care activities with a focus on patient safety and quality. The module emphasises the development of personal and professional qualities essential for working effectively within an inter-professional practice placement team, fostering effective communication, adaptability, and collaborative skills.
You will examine and assess your role as a supervisor, developing skills to effectively support learners in the practice setting. To guide and enhance your clinical decision-making, this module introduces various leadership models and supervision frameworks relevant to the nursing associate role, including practice supervisor training.

Theory 3 – Perspectives on care across the age spectrum (40 Credits)
In this module, you will explore the essential knowledge required to support and enhance care for patients and their families across a range of settings, focusing on both preventative interventions and the care of acutely and chronically ill individuals. You will deepen your understanding of the nursing associate's role in delivering safe and effective care for patients with complex needs. This will involve analysing various tools and frameworks, as well as investigating the broader evidence base that supports nursing associate interventions.
You will also examine the trajectory of health and illness, starting with preventative care, progressing through acute presentation and diagnosis, and extending to providing and monitoring care in chronic conditions and preparing for end-of-life care across all age groups. The module will emphasise the importance of decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking in addressing the diverse needs of patients and their caregivers.
The topics covered in this module include:
• Health promotion and preventative interventions to reduce the risk of developing illness.
• The biological basis of illness and applied pharmacology to aid in problem-solving and anticipating patient needs, particularly in caring for patients with complex conditions.
• Evidence-based practices that support contemporary nursing associate interventions for patients of all ages.
• Ensuring safe, effective, and ethically sound care during both acute and chronic phases of illness or recovery.
• Theoretical foundations of nursing associate care across different healthcare settings.

Skills 4 - Advancing Medicines Management (20 Credits)
In this module, you will expand on the knowledge and skills gained during your practice placements, as well as the theoretical concepts from year 1. The module will introduce more advanced skills, in line with the NMC (2024) Standards of Proficiency for Nursing Associates. The primary focus will be on pharmacology, medicine management, medication calculations, and the administration of medications across the lifespan, and within a variety of practice placement settings.
You will develop an analytical understanding of pharmacology fundamentals, with a focus on safe, evidence-based medication administration practices. You will also gain essential knowledge and understanding of the effects of medication, including allergies, drug sensitivity, side effects, contraindications, and adverse reactions. This knowledge is essential for your role as a nursing associate, enabling you to recognise and respond appropriately to different patient reactions. Additionally, the module will focus on enhancing your communication skills, ensuring you can administer medications effectively and accurately report side effects to promote patient understanding and clarity.
You will explore best practices for maintaining patient safety consistently, using evidence and professional guidance to navigate various care environments. A central focus is on delivering care that upholds patient dignity, individuality, and well-being. You will learn to incorporate reasonable adjustments, promote independence, and support the rights and choices of people who use services and their carers (PUSC). The module combines theoretical knowledge with practical application to prepare you for the delivery of safe, empathetic, and effective nursing associate practice.
The module will help you develop greater confidence in understanding and administering medication via a variety of routes, allowing you to contribute effectively within the delivery of nursing associate care. You will also develop your skills in documentation of medication within practice placements that adheres to legislation and have an awareness of medicine optimisation and the care of patients with complex needs in accordance with local and national policies.

At Northumbria University your academic learning takes place through a combination of face-to-face teaching, online resources, and practical training. At least 20% of your working hours are dedicated to off-the-job training, covering essential topics such as evidence-based practice, life sciences, and medicines management.

Apprentices studying an apprenticeship do not pay any tuition fees, however, as they are in full-time employment they do not have student status and therefore are not entitled to apply for student finance.

Before entry onto the programme, all Apprenticeship applicants must complete an Initial Skills Assessment which maps their prior knowledge against the apprenticeship standard. This is part of the University’s regulatory funding obligations. The purpose of an apprenticeship is to provide new learning and the skills assessment will be used to establish whether we need to tailor your programme in any way to account for your previous qualifications or experience. It also provides a benchmark against which to map your progress on the programme.
