Postgraduate Research

Jude -kennedy -obichereIn this research work, a novel model reference adaptive control (MRAC) algorithm for optimum operation of the brushless doubly fed reluctance generator (BDFRG) – a viable, low cost and robust alternative to its widely-used counterpart, the conventional slip-ring doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), has been introduced and evaluated by comprehensive simulation studies and experimental validation under typical operating conditions. Such vector control implementation, in addition with power factor control (PFC) and maximum power factor (MPF) for control of real and reactive power to ascertain the machine efficiency, can serve as a platform for further research on this emerging and prominent brushless machine topology for applications in large wind turbines and industries, where the cost advantages of partially-rated power electronics and high reliability of brushless structure can be fully utilized. This is a major step towards a universal controller for doubly-fed machines and this work has not been reported or published anywhere.
