"stay connected with your colleagues throughout your career. As you move forward, you will learn how important your network is. Northumbria University is known for its large diverse alumni from all over the world. Reach out, keep in touch and embrace the process."

 
 

Emma Sykes

MLaw (Exempting), 2016

Emma is the Notary Public and Solicitor with Bryan and Armstrong. Her top tip for 2021 graduates is: 

"don’t spend your time comparing yourself to others on your course - Trust the process and enjoy it! Work hard, be willing to learn and you will get there. Never forget the days you dreamed of being where you are now."

 
 

Charlotte Baston

Human Resource Management, 2020

Charlotte is the HR Manager and Work Coach at Out of The Box Operational Solutions LTD. Her top tip for 2021 graduates is:

"If plan A does not work out, do not worry. Be proactive and remain positive and something good will come. Just take a minute to think the position you are in now will be completely different to where you will be in 3 months time."

 

 Peter Collins

MSc Records & Archive Management, 2009

Peter is the Head of Curatorship & Curator of Making at Derby Museum. His top tip for 2021 graduates is:

"the world is always changing and you can never predict it. so make sure you a flexible in your approach to developing your career but also make sure you enjoy the journey in developing it."

 
 

Beatriz Castillo Adán

Applied Languages DipHE, 2009

Beatriz is an English teacher for Government of Andalusia in Spain. Her top tip for 2021 graduates is:

"make the most of everything they have learnt at university without forgetting to enjoy life. I really encourage travelling and working abroad as it helps you grow up and understand different cultures. After I finished at Northumbria I returned to Spain and completed a teaching masters that allowed me to travel back to the UK and work in the Education sector for around four years.I was the most fulfilling experience of my life. After that, I started working as an English teacher back in the southern region of Spain."

 

Oliver Tuley

Business Management, 2017

Oliver is the Digital Product Manager at Virgin Media. His top tip for 2021 graduates is:

"there is opportunities for everyone! Be proactive and don’t give up, if you see roles advertised try find the hiring manager on linkedin and message them to see if you can find out more about the role. Trust in the process, don’t get put off my no’s at interviews - the right opportunity will come along for you."

 
 

Holly Shiel-Redfern

Law LLB (Hons), 2008

Holly is the Commercial Director at Explain Market Research. Her top tip for 2021 graduates is:

"be relevant. Gain some experience in the sector or industry you want to start your career in. Look at SME businesses not just big corporates - you can gain hands on experience and work with a senior team."

 

 Ian Ramsay

Business Studies with Law, 1980

Ian is the Director of Trenchless consultancy ltd. His top tip for 2021 graduates is:

"your degree is just the opening to a career. In the world of employment you have to start again to learn. Prepare, take your time and don't jump in too quickly. If you have your degree you know what you are doing. but social skills, enthusiasm (controlled) and understanding (do your homework) for a meeting or when you go for an interview is essential. it is not just your qualifications the company are interested in, Its you. You must sell yourself. Your personality is key."
