Sustainable Drainage Solutions at Northumbria

Course: Construction Project Management with BIM

Completed: May 2021

Number of students: 3

Brief: Develop sustainable drainage plans for the University to mitigate flood risk and to minimise pressure on local sewerage systems.  Proposals could also consider benefit to other SDGs e.g. Life on land.  Firstly, identify areas of greatest flood risk or excessive discharge to drains during times of heavy rainfall, then develop proposals on how the University can mitigate this risk. Provide information on benefit (e.g. impact to discharge rates) and costs.

Recommendations:

Analysis and recommendations were presented to the University.  These included comparisons between slot drains, trench drains, bioretention areas, and tree pits, with different options recommended for various locations on campus.  These will be considered within future estate planning.
