Northumbria takes the lead in sport performance analysis with new global partnership

2nd November 2016

Northumbria University has entered into a formal partnership with one of the world’s biggest sport performance analysis companies.

The University is one of only a handful of institutions in the UK and around the world to host education training courses organised by sports data and technology company, STATS.

STATS analyses performance data from more than 100,000 games a year and provides sports data, technology, and content to media organisations around the world. The company partners with leagues and teams to improve team performance through its player tracking, athlete monitoring and development, and video analysis.

The partnership with Northumbria has been developed over a number of years and is an exciting prospect for students looking to enter the professional sports industry.

Dr Angela Hibbs, Programme Leader for Sport Science with Coaching at Northumbria University, said: “To be one of only a handful of institutions in the UK and around the world to host the education training courses organised by STATS is a great privilege and one that our students will benefit hugely from.

“We have had placement students complete work experience with the company, graduates go on to have hugely successful careers with them as well and to continue to promote the opportunities the company have to offer to our students will continue to promote these opportunities and open doors of the students at Northumbria.

“Northumbria University is excited to be involved with one of the biggest sport performance analysis statistical analysis companies in the world and we are excited to see the partnership develop further and become even stronger.”

In October, Northumbria University welcomed participants from across the country for a Performance Analysis to Professional Sport weekend-long course as one of only four UK bases selected by STATS to run their education training courses for their software and products.

Jamie Dos Anjos, Education Consultant at STATS, said: “The course at Northumbria University represents the first public course by STATS in the North East. The Level 1 course welcomed attendees from across the country for a weekend learning how to apply Performance Analysis to professional sport, using STATS Matchviewer to consolidate the theory that the course teaches”.

“Thanks to our growing partnership and the outstanding facilities at the University, we look forward to offering our full STATS curriculum at Northumbria University. Over the coming year, we will hold more Performance Analysis courses to offer opportunities to people looking to enter the professional sports industry.”

Ewan Waite, a student on the Applied Sport and Exercise degree programme who took part in last week’s Performance Analysis course at Northumbria University, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the course as it gave me an insight into the detail and specificity involved especially in football and the work that goes on behind the scenes in a football club. The course was well led and prepares you for working as part of a team, as well as developing the communication and organisational skills that are required in all jobs.”

The next STATS course to be held at Northumbria University is the Level 1 Notational Analysis workshop on Saturday and Sunday 12/13th November, for more details please visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/stats-notational-analysis-level-1-newcastle-tickets-268417343500
