Law academics reach finals

20th April 2018

Two academics from Northumbria Law School have been shortlisted in the prestigious Northern Law Awards.

Senior lecturers at Northumbria Law School, Victoria Roper and Tony Storey, have been named as finalists in the Law Teacher of the Year category. The awards celebrate the great wealth of talent and success of all those practising and working in the legal industry in the North of England.

Victoria and Tony have been recognised for enhancing the student learning experience in areas such as industry experience, an innovative teaching approach and for contributing to legal teaching through scholarly activities and publications.

Victoria commented: “As a qualified solicitor who has trained and practiced in the North East, I am passionate about legal education and helping to develop the next generation of lawyers in the region. The student experience is very important to me and I strive to put students at the heart of everything I do”.

Professor Michael Stockdale, Head of Law at Northumbria. said: “These awards recognise the best of the best in the North East’s legal sector, so to have two academics shortlisted in the teacher of the year category is a tremendous achievement. It is testament to the quality of their teaching, and the outstanding learning experience provided for our students across the Law School.  We are consistently rated one of the best in the sector for sustained graduate employment, and much this success is down the quality and experience of our academics – both as inspirational lecturers and in many cases as former lawyers themselves.”

The Student Law Office at Northumbria has also been shortlisted for the pro-bono category in this year’s Northern Law Awards. The service provides free legal advice to clients, provided by final year students supported by legally qualified supervisors. Northumbria Law School is an acknowledged leader in this form of experiential learning, and participation is highly valued by the students.

Northumbria Law School is the largest law school in the North East and recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in legal education. In the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject, it was ranked for the first time in the top 251-300 law schools globally.
