International Materials Science conference comes to Northumbria
For the first time in its 15-year history, a prestigious international conference on Materials Science will be hosted in the UK, at Northumbria University.
The annual International Conference on Materials Processing and Characterisation (ICMPC) will take place at the University’s City Campus, in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, and online from 5 to 8 September 2023.
Previously held in India and Australia, the objective of the conference is to bring together experts from academic institutions, industry, research institutes and professional engineers to share knowledge, expertise and experience in the emerging trends related to advanced materials processing and characterisation.
The field of materials research produces life-changing outcomes due to applications in healthcare, renewable energy, manufacturing and the circular economy.
Convened by Professor Swadesh Singh, Dean of Research and Development at the Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology (GRIET), India, the ICMPC conference will be hosted by Northumbria University’s Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering thanks to his collaborative work with Professor Esther Akinlabi, who joined Northumbria last year.
Professor Akinlabi, Deputy Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “Northumbria already has a rich research culture with many talented researchers working in the groundbreaking field of materials science who are helping to shape and transform lives by developing the advanced materials of the future.

“So it’s a great honour for us to be hosting this conference which I am sure will provide excellent opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange.”
Professor Akinlabi will chair the 2023 conference, supported by Northumbria deputy co-chairs Professor Bin Xu and Professor Wai Lok Woo. Northumbria’s Dean of Research Culture, Professor Matt Baillie Smith, will give a welcome address.
Expert invited speakers at the conference will be from Germany, Sweden, Greece, South Africa and India, as well as universities across the UK.
A number of industry partners will be supporting the event including Struers, Shimadzu, Verder Scientific and Oxford Instruments.
During the conference, 10 special awards will be presented to delegates attending in person, including best student research, best paper from an early career researcher and prizes recognising the best material applications showcased at the event.
Registration
Early bird registration for online participants closes on 1 August, followed by in-person registration on 22 August. Delegates who wish to attend online can continue to register until 1 September.
Those attending in person will be invited to a conference networking dinner at 6.30pm on 6 September. Online participants need to submit an eight-minute pre-recorded video presentation.
