Miss Lauren Doyle

I am originally from Glasgow in Scotland but I currently live and am based in Armagh, Northern Ireland. I studied for my BSc and MSc (Res) in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow where I was able to explore many fields of astronomy before focusing on the study of solar flares as my main research interest. One of my main reasons for pursuing a PhD is my passion for astronomy which I have held since I was a young girl! While at Glasgow I was a key member of their outreach programme and I have carried this on during my PhD at Armagh and Northumbria. I have been actively involved in a number of events both with local schools and also at the Armagh Planetarium, encouraging younger generations to pursue careers in science. I am also an active member of the Juno committee here at Armagh where I hope to bring awareness and solutions to the gender balance in Physics and Astronomy while also working towards gender equality as a whole.

Research

Research title: Solar and Stellar Flares.

Research Interests: I am a PhD student based at Armagh Observatory and Northumbria University and currently in my second year with a focus on solar and stellar flares. My main research interests include observational solar physics, in particular the the investigations of solar flares at a chromospheric level. In addition, I am also interested in stellar flares particularly on low mass stars and use my knowledge of solar flares to infer about the nature of these events. I am also interested in the magnetic field structure of flare events and active regions as well as the overall magnetic structure in low mass stars. I use data from a wide range of instruments including SST/CRISP, SDO, Hinode/EIS and Kepler/K2.
