Santander Universities

Santander Universities is a division of the Santander organisation aimed at supporting the communities in which it operates.

Since 2015, our partnership with Santander Universities UK has delivered a wide range of benefits to Northumbria University students.

Campus Branch

An on-campus branch, based in Northumbria Students’ Union on City Campus West, making banking easier for all students and staff.

Postgraduate Scholarships

The Santander Universities scholarship, which launched in 2019 awards outstanding students with a £2,000 cash scholarship to support completing a full time Masters course. Find out more and apply.

International mobility awards

Through our partnership we are able to offer mobility awards of £1,500 to enable students to gain experience of studying in other countries.

Santander Universities support Northumbria students and graduate entrepreneurs as well as the small business community in the North East through a variety of competitions and awards, online resources and start up events. To date Santander has funded a two Enterprise Experience weekends, with over 90 students attendees.

Placements and Internships

The Santander SME Internship programme 2018/2019 is open to all University of Northumbria students and graduates from 2017 and 2018. 

The internships are based with SME'S across a range of sectors. The duration of the internships will vary in length between 2-10 weeks.

Northumbria University, in partnership with Santander Universities, are offering the opportunity for students to carry out a Virtual Internship in Semester 1 of the academic year 2020-21.

The scholarship to cover administrative costs for a one-semester online internship organised by our partner Virtual Internships ( will be awarded to 10 applicants based on academic and employability merit.



  • Be enrolled as a full-time student at Northumbria
  • Good academic standing: Be on track for a First or 2:1
  • Have access to the technology needed for the placement (computer and internet access)
  • Submit a letter of intent explaining: Why you are a good candidate for a virtual internship; what skills you want to develop during the internship; how you will make sure it is successful remotely;  and what you can offer to the company.
  • Submit a character reference letter from an academic member of staff or employer.

In order to apply for the scholarship, please fill in our online form in the link below by Friday 10 July, 2020.
