What are the Times Higher Education (THE) awards?

Widely referred to as the ‘Oscars of higher education’, the THE Awards are one of the most respected university awards schemes, attracting hundreds of entries from individuals, teams, and institutions from all corners of the UK and Ireland.

The ceremony for the THE Awards 2022 took place at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel in November 2022, where nearly a thousand guests gathered to celebrate the successes of UK universities.

Another key milestone for Northumbria University

The University of the Year award marks another key milestone for Northumbria, as the Times Higher Education ranking follows previous successes which include becoming the biggest ‘riser for research power’ in both 2014 and 2021 (Research Excellence Framework).

“Northumbria is an example of a university that set a long-term strategy and pursued it with great clarity, transforming the institution’s research profile but without leaving behind its hugely valuable and distinctive attributes as a modern university. The scale of its ambition, the rigour and effectiveness with which it has been pursued, and its role in transforming lives and supporting its region all make it a deserving winner of this year’s University of the Year award.”

“When I was invited to become Chancellor at Northumbria there were two things that stood out. The first was the people, who are extraordinary, and the second was the level of ambition. It wasn’t about being a bit better, it was about being the absolute best they could be. Winning the Times Higher Education University of the Year award recognises these qualities for all to see.”

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chancellor at Northumbria University
