Architecture and Built Environment

Unlike virtual reality, which creates a completely immersive virtual environment, augmented reality overlays digital content onto real-world imagery. This talk will present explorations of integrating spatial augmented reality & projection mapping into space design to create spatial illusion.

We all live in a house but how much do we know about it? Throughout the human history, housing form and culture have evolved in a radically different way in different regions. Even after the globalisation, there exists a huge difference how people live inside their house. This short talk will introduce two contrasting domestic cultures of West Europe and East Asia to show how they have evolved and why they still maintain their unique cultural behaviour even inside the 21st century homes.

This talk covers a series of Interior Architecture and Architecture projects undertaken by students and staff from Northumbria Architecture in partnership with the National Trust at Gibside. They range from speculative interventions, building adaptations and renewed interiors for new uses, through to built works and masterplanning for an enriched visitor experience. Using images from student and staff projects, the talk illustrates our commitment to authentic learning experiences for our students, it covers a key area of research for staff and our approach to context and placemaking.

Building Surveyors take on the tomorrow after construction of a building. We tend to take buildings for granted, yet buildings have long lives, needing more care than most people imagine. Christopher Reeves, Programme Leader for Building Surveying at Northumbria University, will talk about the profession of buildings in use, some buildings he surveyed and introduce the course.

This talk will explore how environmental design is a creative process. The sensory information we receive from our environment is intrinsic to human beings’ relationships with place. By crafting buildings that manipulate lighting, acoustics, texture, and ventilation, we can create joy in architecture through the stimulation of ALL the senses.

80% of investment into UK real estate is from overseas investors. Likewise, 80% of UK Real Estate Investment is in overseas property markets. While property is fixed in location its ownership and transaction is a global process. All markets are currently undergoing disruption from new models of working and the more recent impacts of Covid-19. Consequently, those who have an interest in real estate, or want to pursue a career in property, need to understand the global characteristics of property and international market dynamics. This taster talk will provide an introduction to these issues and argue that the contemporary property professional is more vital than ever in managing these dynamic and turbulent characteristics.
