This mini-lecture sets out some of the little-known political and historic features which underpinned the Barcelona Olympics. All the art work, song, dance commissioned tells a deeper story about Barcelona, from its Stadium named after a defeated Catalan leader in Spain’s Civil War to the recuperation of Joan Miró’s art. It examines how art, theatre and music combine to create a city and its persona.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant moving much of our face-to-face activity online. However, media scholars have been exploring the implications of digital social interactions for decades. This presentation will outline some of those implications, focusing on intimate interactions. While we might usually consider intimacy to require in-person interaction, but can intimacy be replicated online? Is it possible that digital interactions can create new forms of intimacy?

The sessions explores the importance of theatre and performance in the contemporary world, asking: what is theatre for, what does performance do in the world, and why might we need to study it now more than ever? In exploring these questions, we will explore the degree you will be studying and some recent enhancements that have been made to your programme of studies that make it even more exciting, dynamic and future facing than before.
