Family, the most fundamental social institution, has great implications to marketing strategy. However, contemporary family is experiencing many transformations. What are these transformations? Why do firms exist, for shareholders or for society, customers and employees? To earn a profit or to serve a purpose? Shareholders and stakeholders both play fundamental roles in a firm, but their aims and interests are very different. The question of whom a firm should serve has been debated over a long period of time and still has no clear answer to date. In light of COVID19, some companies have been criticised for valuing shareholders over other stakeholders and, critics have called for firms to create greater value for all stakeholders. This taster session aims to help you develop your curiosity in exploring the ‘complex’ issue of the purpose of a firm. Understanding this debate is a key starting point for accounting, finance and economics studies.
