This talk addresses why disaster risk reduction and sustainable development education, practice and policy have become more crucial than ever, and how knowledge and a career in this area can both drive personal development and improve the human condition. Based on experiences from our teaching and professional work it will be demonstrated how disasters of many kinds need not be inevitable.
