Petroleum currently supplies most of the world’s energy and fuels, powering around 90% of global transportation. However, as a fossil fuel, it is both finite and a major contributor to pollution and climate change. To ensure a sustainable future, we urgently need cost-effective and scalable alternatives that can reduce our reliance on petroleum.
Our Vision: BioFutures
BioFutures is focused on unlocking the potential of molecular biosystems to create innovative, sustainable solutions for society. This interdisciplinary research theme brings together experts from across the university to develop bio-based technologies that can support a healthier planet and economy.
By connecting researchers with businesses and industries, BioFutures aims to drive progress in key areas such as:
- Clean energy and fuel alternatives
- Sustainable materials and chemicals
- Health and environmental innovation
BioFutures provides a collaborative platform that encourages bold ideas and cross-disciplinary partnerships. It plays a central role in the university’s Peaks of Excellence initiative, fostering a vibrant research environment where new solutions to global challenges can take root and grow.
