Projects

The IDRT funded Dr Wallace Chan’s project ‘Post-death support among Hong Kong migrants’.  This project explores the facilitators and barriers to providing culturally sensitive post-death support to Hong Kong migrants, and these migrants’  concerns and support needs around planning and handling post-death issues.

Dr Muluken Chekol received funding for his study ‘Intra-Community Communication Among Black Migrants During Anti-Migration Protests: A Case Study of Ethiopian and Eritrean Communities in Newcastle’.   This project explores how migrants share information, evaluate threats, and develop coping strategies during anti-migration protests.

We funded Dr Petra Mäkelä’s project, ‘Community engagement with survivors of human rights abuses to inform research on humanitarian assessment models in the UK.’  This project engages with survivors of human rights abuses who have experience of seeking asylum in the UK, in order to find out what they think researchers and providers need to understand about their experiences and priorities, and how these insights can shape the co-development of future research.

We provided funds for PhD Candidate Supriti Malhotra’s project ‘Ethnocultural Empathy and Altered Consciousness (EEAC) – A Situated Experiment in Mixed Reality (MR) Design’, enabling her to organise focus groups, and conduct behavioural tests during the trials of her Mixed Reality design.

Dr Sarah Peck received funding for her research project ‘Migration, labour agency and bhangra in Britain’, which explores how bhangra dancing was employed by the Indian Workers’ Association (Great Britain) from 1968 - 1985 as part of their attempts to improve workers’ living and working conditions in Britain.  The project culminated in an exhibition at the Leicester IWA(GB) branch.

Dr Sharon Wilson, Professor Helena Farrand Carrapico, and Professor Matthew Brannan received funding for their project ‘Spaces of Applied Exception: Storytelling, Space, and the Repurposing of Hospitality Sites as Migrant Internment’, a pilot study exploring how hospitality spaces have been reconfigured for use in migrant detention.
