Modern & Contemporary Literature

Meet our staffOur vibrant and diverse research group boasts a particularly strong profile in English and American Modernism, critical and gender theory, and popular culture and media. In addition, our interdisciplinary research in geography and writing, and place, space and mobility makes use of both critical and creative approaches.

Some highlights of our current activities include Ann-Marie Einhaus's work as Co-Investigator on the AHRC Exploratory project 'The First World War in the Classroom' (February 2013-May 2014) which explores how the way war literature is taught in secondary schools and further education relates to the popular memory of the Great War. Katherine Baxter and Victoria Bazin, with colleagues at Newcastle and Durham Universities, founded the North East Modernist Research Initiative, which holds regular reading groups and provides opportunities for collaboration.
