About this course

This course is an open Continuing Professional Development course. In order to book, please follow the booking link, or if not available, fill out the enquiry form and a member of staff will be in touch with you shortly.

This Certificate is aimed at everyone who wants to be able to improve sports performance through data analysis. You’ll learn what data can be gathered, how to interpret it, how to apply it to the coaching and training process, and how to make use of it in competitions.

Many teams are looking for evidence-based interventions that help improve efficiency of performance while reducing the risk of injury. So it makes perfect sense that sport performance analysis is increasingly in demand.

The course is particularly relevant for coaches at Level 1-2 in sports such as soccer, rugby, basketball and hockey, as well as teachers of PE in secondary schools. The course is also very appropriate for sport coaching students and others who might progress to further training and become accredited sports performance analysts.

Upon registering for the course, you’ll receive log-in details which will give you 6-months access to the website, where you can study, via distance learning, at times that suit your existing commitments. You’ll receive extensive support including an online Q&A session with tutors. At no point is there any requirement to attend the University’s campus in Newcastle.

Learn from the Best

The course has been developed by Dr Angela Hibbs and Marc Briggs. Angela has over 12 years’ experience of working alongside international elite sportsmen and women, as well as five years’ experience of teaching. She has worked with multiple professional sports teams, individuals and Institutes of Sports both in the UK and Australia.

Marc, like Angela, is a member of staff within Northumbria’s Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. His specialist interests include coaching science and performance analysis.

Teaching and Assessment

As a distance learner, you’ll be provided with online teaching and access to our eLearning Portal that contains a wealth of relevant material. You’ll also be given access to Northumbria’s IT and library systems, allowing you to use resources such as electronic journals, databases and software. Feedback is provided by the course tutors and we provide special online Question & Answer sessions.

Give Your Career an Edge

The course gives you tools that you can use to improve the performance of teams that you manage or assist with. A former student says: "Taking the online course at Northumbria University has been of major benefit to my own coaching development and that of my rugby team and has seen us making significant gains in performance. As a coach of both rugby and basketball I would recommend this to coaches in any sport."

Your Future

On completion of the course, a logical next step would be a more in-depth course in sports performance analysis that is accredited by ISPAS (the International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport).
