About this course

This course is an open Continuing Professional Development course. In order to book, please follow the booking link, or if not available, fill out the enquiry form and a member of staff will be in touch with you shortly.

The Professional Skills Course (PSC) is provided for trainee solicitors, who must complete the course before admission to the profession.  The PSC is designed to build on the foundations laid by the Legal Practice Course and also on your practice during your training contract.

The structure of the course, which is determined by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), consists of a compulsory core element of 48 hours of tuition with assessments, and an elective element of 24 hours of tuition.  We deliver the course over 12 separate days, with additional time for assessments.

The course is run on a rolling basis, so you can join it at any time.  The SRA recommend that the timing of the various elements should be appropriate to your experience.  For example, it will be more effective if the Client Care and Professional Standards module is completed after you have undertaken at least six months’ training.

The PSC takes place at Northumbria Law School, which has a national and international reputation for excellence in legal education.

Learn from the Best

Northumbria Law School is the largest law school in the North East of England and our inspirational academic staff have a genuine passion for their subject.  We are authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as a provider of the PSC.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching takes place during intensive days at City Campus East in Newcastle. You can expect a stimulating mix of short lectures, workshops, case-based discussions and reflective practice. Assessment methods include examinations and skills appraisals.

Your Future

Once you have successfully completed the course, and your period of recognised training contract, you will have fulfilled the final elements of the vocational stage of training. Your next step will be to seek admission to the roll of solicitors. The Solicitors Regulation Authority ensures that only those who have undertaken the appropriate training, and are of appropriate character and suitability, will be admitted to the roll.
