NX9662 - Applied Management Research Project

What will I learn on this module?

The Applied Management Research Project is a student-led individual experiential learning project that supports student-led knowledge exchange for the region and beyond. It provides you the opportunity to demonstrate your authentic engagement with real world challenges within the discipline. Integrating the knowledge you have developed during your programme you will connect theory-into-practice as you engage with, diagnose and prescribe practical and actional recommendations for change for, a real-world organising or organisational concern. This concern will be discerned from within one of a number of themed priority research areas based upon contemporary concerns within the region and informed by our academics’ areas of expertise. While you may identify your own research site for this Project, you may prefer instead to engage with the priority areas through our existing local and regional partnerships.

The initial taught elements of the module will build upon your knowledge and understanding of conventional research methods, examining and applying these within the context of your chosen Applied Management Research Project. Additionally, you will be introduced to distinct approaches to taking action for social and organisational change, and for contributing to knowledge exchange for the region.

Through engaging with the Applied Management Research Project, you will not only develop and integrate your knowledge and understanding of your discipline but also have the opportunity to develop and enhance key transferable employability skills including time management, project management, communication (written, aural and verbal), negotiation, persuasion and influence, discovery, initiative, problem-solving and analysis. Through contributing to knowledge exchange for the region and beyond you will be contributing to your own, and the University’s local-social-civic impact.

How will I learn on this module?

The Applied Management Research Project is a student-led individual experiential learning project that supports student-led Knowledge Exchange. You will be supported initially by weekly lectures and workshops to support you to build upon your knowledge and understanding of conventional research methods, examining and applying these within the context of your chosen Applied Management Research Project. These sessions will build upon your learning at level 5 (Year 2) of your programme and will include the following areas: developing an evidence base for the study, researching ethically, research techniques, and data analysis techniques. Additionally, you will be introduced to distinct approaches to taking action for social and organisational change, and for contributing to knowledge exchange for the region.
Workshops will provide you with the opportunity to put this developing knowledge into practice for your own proposed research project. Importantly, through engaging with these taught sessions you will develop the underpinning knowledge necessary for undertaking your individual student-led research and for developing your assessed portfolio.

Following your submission of an initial study proposal you will work with an assigned supervisor in a group supervision format. Supervision groups will be assigned, coalescing around your chosen research theme area and supervisors will be appointed in line with NBS policy which recognise the requirements of professional bodies and AACSB accreditation. These Supervision meetings will offer you the opportunity to seek guidance to support your Applied Management Research Project process. They will be timetabled and provide an opportunity to both secure formative feedback on your work in progress, while some of the individual work undertaken within contributing towards your overall grade for the module.
A supporting reading list provides you with key references to enable you to undertake a more detailed and in-depth review of your research. You will be expected to keep up to date with your project tasks.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The selection of a suitable Applied Management Research Project rests with you, the student. However, your project will be discerned from within one of a number of themed priority research areas proposed to you, based upon contemporary concerns within the region and informed by our academics’ areas of expertise. While you may identify your own research site for this project, you may prefer instead to engage with your chosen priority area through our existing local and regional partnerships.

A key element of this module is the experiential nature of exploration and discovery as you engage with, diagnose and prescribe practical and actional recommendations for change for, a real-world organising or organisational concern. To achieve this, you will be supported by:
• Lecture tutors
• Workshop tutors
• Supervisor, who will have an interest in your programme subject area, or a related field
• Your peers in the workshops and your Supervision group

The module is supported by an e-learning portal, which acts as a repository for: lecture materials, workshop materials, assessment details. In addition, the eLP houses the online reading list (including direct links to textbooks, journal papers, academic and conference reports) and various support facilities such as the recordings of certain lectures.

5. Develop and appraise key employability capabilities, including time management, project management, communication (written and verbal), negotiation, persuasion and influence, discovery, initiative, creativity and innovation in problem-solving and analysis (MLO5)

How will I be assessed?

The module assessment comprises one overall component with sub-elements (100%). The sub-elements include:
• Concise Applied Management Research Project report
• Portfolio of evidence demonstrating engagement with the research process
Together these will address MLOs 1-5 (10,000 words equivalent effort)

Formative assessment will take place through applied peer activities. You will receive on-going formative feedback from your supervisor and throughout the period of your engagement with the Applied Management Research Project process. Full and detailed guidance will be given on this assessment

The eLP will be used to permanently host detailed guidance on the assessment elements, also a copy of the marking criteria, to ensure that you can access it throughout the Applied Management Research Project process
