SP7012 - Practical Skills for Sport and Exercise Nutritionists

What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will gain advanced skills and understanding of the practical requirements needed for a career in nutrition. The module will cover a critical overview of the assessment of energy balance and provide new insights to alternative techniques. You will also learn advanced knowledge of the tools and techniques used to assess body composition, and gain an understanding of how to identify potential issues and troubleshoot such issues. The module will also give you an understanding of key laboratory skills and techniques that is beneficial for both applied nutrition and nutritional research.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will be taught through interactive lectures, which may include discussions and tasks, as well as practical laboratory workshops as well as seminars to give you a full understanding of each concept. Sessions will be delivered in a variety of formats in order to utilise the potential of each learning platform. You will be able to access materials in advance on the eLP to familiarise yourself with the content of each session. Core content will be delivered through lectures in an interactive format. Furthermore, to allow you to develop essential skills, practical laboratory sessions will facilitate hands on experience of each concept.

You will also be encouraged to engage in independent study, in particular engaging in other formats (e.g. podcasts, websites) in order to further your knowledge in the area.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported through a variety of means throughout the module. You will be provided with important module information during the introduction session. Information about session content and assessment will also be made available through the eLP. The module staff team will also be available to communicate through the eLP such as discussion boards or the messaging service. In addition to this, staff will be available during tutorial hours for individual support outside of timetabled hours. An assessment session will be provided during the module to afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions. During the module, you will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development. Further academic skills will be supported through the University Library services.

How will I be assessed?

The summative assessment will have two components.

Component 1: An individual practical assessment (30 min) (50%).

Component 2: In groups, you will then be required to produce a client report based on given data (1500 words) (50%).

This assessment will examine your competency of practical skills and your ability to work within teams to effectively interpret and communicate data to an intended audience.

Formative Feedback
Formative assessment will be provided to you during practical laboratory sessions and seminars in the form of both tutor and peer review of your practical skills.

Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract

The Practical Skills for Sport and Exercise Nutritionists module provides you with advanced skills and understanding of the practical requirements needed for a career in nutrition. During this module you will learn the tools and techniques used to assess energy balance, body composition and key laboratory skills and techniques that is beneficial for both applied nutrition and nutritional research. The module will be taught through lectures, seminars and practical workshops to give you a full understanding of the skills from a theoretical standpoint, through to gaining hands-on experience, all of which are key skills required for a career in the research and nutrition industry.
