OT6009 - Transition To Practice

What will I learn on this module?

This module will support you to transition to entry level practitioner. We will explore themes of professionalism, facilitation of learning, leadership and development, underpinned by Royal College of Occupational Therapy and HCPC guidelines.

You will draw on all previous learning to develop and consolidate your knowledge, skills and values in preparation for practice and to meet requirements for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an occupational therapist.

People with lived experience have been involved in identifying core values. You will be encouraged to draw on a range of perspectives to assess your own skills and continue to take responsibility for your own learning and continual professional development.

You will critically consider the current and future health and well-being employment landscape and hone skills to effectively navigate this landscape as a practitioner. You will continue to critically reflect on complex scenarios and share reflective insights with others to promote collective learning. Module topics could include theories of leadership and change; personal and team resilience; supervision, coaching and mentorship. The module will also support the development of employability skills such as preparing CVs and action plans and preparing for interviews. Sessions towards the end of the programme will reflect on your learning journey and celebrate achievements.

At level 6, you will be skilled at reflective practice and integrating this with your ePortfolio. As part of your transition to registered practitioner, you will determine your own personal and/or group outcomes and take responsibility for your action plans.

Where appropriate, contributors with lived experience and practitioners will also support your learning.

The site provides a wide variety of core and supplementary information to encourage you to engage fully in the module content and consolidate and develop your learning skills. Guided reading is provided to encourage you to be intellectually curious, and in class activities will encourage you to challenge ideas and concepts.

You will have the opportunity to gather examples of activities and evidence of your learning, self-appraisal and reflection to contribute to your student ePortfolio. This aims to enhance your learning by taking you beyond the limits of the individual module, and helping foster lifelong learning. Items for your portfolio could include your current CV and sample responses to job interview questions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The identified module tutor, alongside the module teaching team, will structure a blend of face-to-face and on-line learning opportunities to support your learning within the module and to assist you to work towards the module assessment. The module handbook, the reading list, and information communicated throughout the module within sessions and via Blackboard (Northumbria University’s Virtual Learning Environment) will all signpost you to resources to support your academic development.
