Northumbria University is committed to supporting students with outstanding abilities in both their academic studies and wider interest areas.

The Sport Coaching Scholarship, funded by the University’s Higher Education Without Barriers campaign, is aimed at enabling aspiring coaches to gain financial support for living costs and professional development at Northumbria University. Successful students will be awarded £1,000 per year (to a total of £3,000) throughout their Undergraduate degree (subject to satisfactory completion*)

The scholarship is open to gifted coaches who are applying to study on a Full-Time Undergraduate programme in any Faculty/Subject at the University in the academic year 2024/25.

Terms and Conditions

The Undergraduate Sport Coaching Scholarship is open to applicants who would like to progress in the field of sport coaching and you must also:

  • Be a UK/Home applicant - This includes students domiciled in Jersey, Guernsey, The Channel Islands, Ireland and Isle of Man
  • Be actively engaged as a coach or umpire/official to at least club or county level and hold/be working towards a minimum Level 2 qualification in a NGB recognised sport
  • Be an active coach in one of the following:
    • Focus Sports: Basketball, Football, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Volleyball
    • Developing Sports: Badminton, Hockey, Lacrosse and Netball
  • Already have a minimum Level 1 National Governing Body coaching qualification in a sport above, with a Level 2 coaching qualification and experience in officiating being desirable You should be actively engaged as a coach and willing to engage in upskilling to the next level with support from the University’s Sport Department
  • Agree to support and engage with Northumbria Sport staff including coaches through 4-8 hours of contact time through office and on-field work
  • Apply and enrol to study on an Undergraduate Northumbria University course on a Full-Time basis at the Newcastle Upon Tyne campus, starting in September 2024
  • Choose Northumbria as your firm choice by 06 June 2024
  • Meet all individual entry requirements
  • Be a self-funded student (i.e., not sponsored by an employer)
  • Register with Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Wales (SFW), Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI) or Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS)
  • Agree to share consent via your Student Finance Provider with Northumbria University

Important Information

  • Students selected for the Undergraduate Sport Coaching Scholarship 2024 will not be eligible for any other Undergraduate scholarships including Performance Sport scholarships
  • The Scholarship is awarded as cash (£1,000) and will also involve professional development in the form of mentoring
  • *The Scholarship is awarded in the First year of Undergraduate study.  Second and Third year funding is dependent upon the student’s successful engagement and progress throughout the previous year
  • If you are undertaking a placement year, funding will not be provided in this year
  • Payments will be made as 25% of total in November 2024, 25% of total in February 2025 and 50% of total in May 2025
  • If you are undertaking a Foundation Year you are not eligible for the scholarship
  • If you are progressing from a Foundation Year studied at Northumbria or another institution, you are not eligible for the scholarship
  • If you defer your place at Northumbria University before the scholarship has been paid, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn
  • If you decide to leave your course after the scholarship payment has been made, the University will not make efforts to reclaim the amount
  • If you are required to re-sit your first year, the scholarship will not be paid again
  • The University's decision is final and cannot be challenged; there is no right of appeal

Selection Process

  • To apply, students must complete a Sport Coaching application form.  If short-listed, evidence of sport qualification and endorsement by the applicant’s club or National Governing Body must also be provided.
  • Selection will be based upon the strength of the application form however, it will also take into consideration opportunities that there are for the student to receive mentoring support from the University or a partner organisation within the sport

  • The successful applicants will be notified once the evaluation panel has met, by no later than Friday 13 September 2024
