Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
North Yorkshire
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
Great location to the city, modern campus, diverse teaching styles and subjects, great focus.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
Its fantastic and really welcoming, I like to go out clubbing as most students do, but also to visit Northumberland, local museums and galleries and travel around the region.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
How easy it is to get around and travel, and how cheap it is. Its so cheap for a metro pass or to get the bus and they will take you pretty much anywhere you need or want to go.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
I did. I found it really easy to settle in, the staff and other students were great and everyone understood about what it was like to be in my situation.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
My involvement in the Students' Union, volunteering in a wide range of aspects and running in elections.
What is your favourite place on campus?
The quad on a sunny day, otherwise Escape on the first floor Students' Union.
Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?
I've been involved in a wide range of volunteering projects. Eco NSU, Volunteer Northumbria week, welcome week, running in elections, being a part-time officer, attending NUS national conference, highlight was definitely attending NUS conference as it was so interesting to see national student politics in action.
What is the best thing about your course?
The diversity of what we do. I am constantly learning new things about myself that I didn't know. It's been about finding out what you are naturally better at.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
Be organised, manage your time, plan ahead and turn up to lectures and seminars.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
I've just accepted a full time job as a Community Organiser, I don't know where I'd like to go after that, maybe a campaigner for a political party or work for an NGO. I think the main skills I'v learnt that I'll be able to use are; research, organisation, perseverance, time management and many more actually!
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
I'v completed a politics work experience module at the office of Fiona Hall MEP, some of the most memorable experiences were seeing the diverse range of work they do at a constituency office.
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
Apply! Its a really great University, but also make sure you do your research and pick the right course which is suitable for you. Think about whether you could see yourself living three years of your life here and if so, jump in!
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I'v greatly grown in confidence, my world view has developed significantly, as well as my views on society and politics. I'm now able to be really flexible as a person and adapt to new circumstances.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Exciting, diverse, fulfilling.
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Yes.
