Ruth Beauchamp

BA (Hons) Early Primary Education

Why did you choose Northumbria?

I moved here from Cambridge because I had heard good reports about the Primary Education course at Northumbria University, through both research and word of mouth. The fact that it is a three-year course is also a huge advantage, particularly being a mature student.

What qualifications did you have?

Following my O Levels I went on to do an NNEB course and became a kindergarten assistant in a primary school. Some time later I did an intensive EFL course and taught foreign students both abroad and in England. However, I had always wanted to become a primary teacher but lacked certain qualifications to get onto the teaching course, so I decided to do my HEFC's which enabled me to get into Northumbria University.

What do you like most about the course?

I particularly enjoy going out on placement. We are given the opportunity to both teach and observe on block placements as well as other more focused placements, such as in managing behaviour. We were also given the opportunity to go to Newham, London for a week to observe and experience teaching in a multicultural environment.

How do you get on with your tutors?

They have all been extremely supportive and helpful. We also have professional tutors whom we meet with regularly and are there for extra support and advice should we need it.

What would you like to do when you graduate?

This course has confirmed my ambition to become a primary school teacher. Eventually I would like to move my teaching abroad.

Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course?

You need to be prepared to commit yourself to this course. It requires a lot of hard work and time but is ultimately rewarding. If you are unsure about whether it is the right course for you then I’d recommend the taster session which gives you an insight into teaching and what is required on the course.
