Where are you from?

Jarrow, South Tyneside

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

Northumrbia is the only local university to provide a part time Mechanical Engineering degree.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

The area is a great place to live with excellent nightlife, an excellent array of sporting events to take part in and view with two local Premier League football teams. Housing is excellent quality at affordable prices in comparison to other areas around the UK.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

Nightlife is amazing and there is a diverse array of cultures to enjoy.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, both students and staff are extremely frinedly and always willing to help.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

The course is very diverse and covers a a very broad spectrum of mechanical engineering principles.

What is the best thing about your course?

Over the first two years I would say Energy in Year One was the best as it was a subject I had no knowledge of before joining the degree.  As well as this, I would have to say meeting a lot of good friends during my time of study.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Plan, plan and plan somemore, revision is tough without a schedule!

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

Progress from Senior Designer to Senior Engineer and eventually open my own design company providing structural solutions to oil and gas problems.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

Yes, I have 18 years experience in design draughting.  My most memorable project would be designing parts of the retractable roof for the MCI centre which is an NBA Basketball arena in America.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips? If so, please tell us about them.

Not at present but I am sure in the coming years we may have further oppurtunities.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Review the module content in advance and make sure you are certain the course suits your requirements.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

Improved self confidence in my day to day job and increasing knowledge of design.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Tough, enjoyable, knowledge!

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

Yes, I have already recomended my apprentice to join the course upon completion of his HNC.
