Jenny Nelson

Nursing (Adult)

Where are you from?

Newcastle upon Tyne

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

It was recommended to me and I wanted to stay in Newcastle to study.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I love living in Newcastle and have no plans to leave. All of my family and friends are here and I am proud to from Newcastle. I think we are a cultural city with lots to do. I enjoy visiting the coast and the surrounding areas of Newcastle such as Morpeth and Alnwick.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

A lot has developed in a short space of time, new restaurants and pubs opening. I am impressed by the development of cultural things to do in the city, such as the Late shows that take place in May.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

Northumbria University is very welcoming and I have found it very easy to fit in.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

I have enjoyed meeting the other students on my course and interacting with students from other courses.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

I have had great support from fellow students and my Guidance Tutor.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

I have been most inspired by meeting other students when on placement. Seeing students ahead of me on the same course is incredibly inspiring.

What is your favourite place on campus?

There is a quiet room above Go Cafe where we sit and eat our lunch. It is a great place to socialise away from other students and we have become closer as a GT since we found this place to sit.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course are the lecturers. The staff are all qualified nurses who come with their own practical experience. It is interesting and very informative to be taught be lecturers who have their own knowledge.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

I have learnt the most when I am on placement.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I am unsure exactly where I want to work in the future but I am starting to form an idea of what kind of nurse I want to be. I have learnt and developed the skill of reflective practice and will be taking this forward in to my future practice.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

All placements I have been on so far have been full of memorable experiences and they have been essential in forming my development. I am also a learning leader and have my first leader programme beginning next week and I am excited to do so.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips? If so, please tell us about them.

I am considering looking in to taking part in a student exchange programme in third year.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

I would advise to attend all support services available and to become involved in as many activities as possible.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I have started to be able to see myself as a qualified nurse and I have become more knowledgeable which is developing my confidence.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
