Building Surveing

What appealed to you about Northumbria University?

I’m from Nottingham and I was really looking forward to moving away to study at university and experience another city. Newcastle is known for being a brilliant student city and so I was keen to move up here to study.

I thought the facilities provided by the department looked great.

What do you like most about the course?

The variety of subjects, for example construction technology, law, design and conservation. I also like the more practical side to the course, which enables me to gain some experience and is great for putting the things I’ve learnt into practice.

Do you have the opportunity for any work placements during your course?

I did a sandwich course in my third year with Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. With their Capital Planning Unit I was involved with new construction and refurbishments and my work involved contract administration, sustainability, and construction technology. With the Estates team I was involved in surveys of wards and buildings within the hospital and my work involved measured surveys, fire inspections and condition surveys.

What would you like to do once you graduate?

I would love to continue a career in building surveying ideally at the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.
